IV Peoples’ Summit
of the Americas
The Process
In November 2008, following initial meetings of activists from various groups- farmers, students, cultural activists, community activists, women’s groups, trade unions, environmentalists, and indigenous groups etc., the Secretariat successfully established the Trinidad and Tobago Local Organising Committee (LOC) in preparation for the Summit.
The Secretariat later hosted members of the LOC - Federation of Independent Trade Unions and NGOs (FITUN), Alianza Social Continental /Hemispheric Social Alliance (ASA/ HSA) and
Assembly of Caribbean People (ACP) - for a Two-Day Strategic Planning Meeting where key decisions were made vis-à-vis Summit preparations and the IV Peoples’ Summit and the TTLOC were publicly announced during a press conference.
To effectively manage all administrative and logistical matters of the Summit, a Working Committee was established, comprised of eight sub-committees and the Secretariat.
The Secretariat and Working Committee continue to work assiduously in preparation for the Summit and will meet again with the HSA in February 2009.
Caribbean social movements and civil society organisations are encouraged to create LOCs in their respective states to mobilise participants to attend this very important Summit. The Secretariat remains committed to assisting you in this regard.
